“So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.” I Kings 12:19
931 B.C. is a sad date in Israel’s past. Rehoboam, son of Solomon, ascended to the throne and made a very undiplomatic decision. Led by Jeroboam, the ten northern tribes of Israel asked Rehoboam what type of leadership he would provide as their new king. Unfortunately Rehoboam heeded the advice of his peers and determined that his leadership would be much harsher than his father’s. As a result, Jeroboam led a revolt that would divide the nation in such a way that it never really be reunited this side of eternity.
From that date on the northern ten tribes would exist as the nation of Israel; and Judah and Benjamin would be known as the nation of Judah. Probably the saddest results of all was that the people would continue to follow the erratic leaders that would succeed Rehoboam and Jeroboam. With the end result being Israel was taken into exile by the Assyrians, and Judah was taken into exile by the Babylonians.
I wonder what the outcome of November 8 will bring to pass for the United States? The intensity of the polarizing influence of the issues and the candidates seems to increase every day. Dignity and decorum is at an all-time low, and mudslinging is of epic proportions. Quite frankly, I’m embarrassed by the behavior I see exhibited by our presidential candidates. Given the office for which they are seeking, I would expect that integrity, humility, and sublime respect would be exemplified. However, that exact opposite continues. But like the people of Israel and Judah, my deeper concern is for the American people.
Will we continue to be blinded by the “partisan spirit?” Will we blindly follow the playground bully that pulls in the most votes? Very few would rise above the sequence of unhealthy leadership that ascended the thrones of Israel and Judah. I pray that citizens of these United States will raise the bar, despite those in positions of leadership…and I pray it will start with the Christian community.
